Desmond Tutu once said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” It all started in December 2019, when Komal’s (name changed) mother, Aruna (name changed) fell sick after attending a marriage in their village.
After medical consultation, small reddish spots were observed on her skin, which initially appeared to be normal mosquito bites. After a couple of days, Komal took her mother, Aruna to a clinic for her regular diabetic checkup, where she also mentioned the red spots to the doctor. The doctor suggested taking a CBP test (Complete Blood Count), which showed low platelets count. The doctor advised an immediate admission to the hospital as the platelet count was below 1 lakh, and other tests revealed that she was also dengue positive.
Aruna’s treatment went on for 10 days with no sign of improvement. Despite the proper medication, her platelet count went down to 30,000. When the family discussed with the doctor, he advised consulting a specialized Hematologist in a corporate hospital in Hyderabad.
Upon meeting the Hematologist at the hospital, the doctor advised going for a Complete Hemogram Count(CBC) and ANA by IF test, an Antinuclear antibody test by Immunofluorescence method. By the time the family received the report, the platelet count went down to 10,000, and ANA by IF test results were negative. The Doctor informed them that it’s not dengue, but a disease called ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenia), in which platelets get destroyed by one’s own body cells. Aruna was admitted due to the low platelet count and immediately one SDP (Single Donor Platelets) was transmitted. Her platelet count rose above 1 lakh and she was discharged the next day but the doctor advised her to stay on medication, and she was kept under steroids (Omni Cortile & Romiplostim) for a month. Despite the regular medication, Aruna’s health was not improving, platelets were about 20,000 on and off, so 6 packets of SDP were transmitted again. As there was no development in her condition, the doctor advised further tests; a Bone Marrow Biopsy to check the functionality of the bone marrow.
Only after the tests did the family found out that Aruna was suffering from Severe Aplastic Anemia. In such conditions, the bone marrow does not make enough blood cells for the body to function smoothly.
A doctor suggested taking an appointment with Dr.S.K.Gupta in Hematology BMT Institute International. He is one of the best hematologists in India and a specialist in treating blood disorders, bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen disorders.
Dr.S.K.Gupta studied the reports and explained that the patient did not suffer from ITP, but confirmed that she had Severe Aplastic Anemia. The doctor patiently elucidated the entire situation to the family, which helped them to get a better understanding of the disorder.
On 16th Feb 2020, the patient was admitted to Hematology BMT Institute International under the supervision of Dr. S.K.Gupta. On the first day, CBP test reports showed that the platelets were very low, so the doctor advised to have an SDP transfusion and other initial baseline procedure tests like CT, MRI, abdominal ultrasound test. Aruna was discharged for a few days until the final reports were examined by Dr. Gupta.
Aruna was admitted to the hospital after a week and the treatment procedure was immediately taken over by Dr. Gupta and his team. Dr.S.K. Gupta visited her every day to check her health. Along with the treatment, Dr.Gupta also arranged counseling sessions every week to clear doubts regarding the treatment.
During Aruna’s treatment for the last 6 months, she received only a single RDP (Random Donor Platelets) and RBC (Red Blood Cells) through transfusion.
Dr.S.K.Gupta was also very patient in answering the questions and did not hesitate to respond to doubts and queries of the patient and family. Komal commented, “I strongly recommend Dr.S.K.Gupta not because he treated my mother but, because his knowledge and passion towards treating his patients are impeccable.”
